Inaugural Access Walk Raises $100k to Support Individuals’ Access to Reproductive Healthcare

SEATTLE, Wash. (Nov. 16, 2023)  The first-ever Access Walk, which is the project of the Pyatt family, took place Sunday, Sept. 24, at Volunteer Park. The plan for the event was hatched over a family dinner where they decided to take action to shore up financial help for individuals forced to travel long distances to access safe abortion services after the landmark overturning of Roe v. Wade at the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2022.

To do that, they created Access Walk Seattle. The rain held off for the day’s event that included 233 participants and a total of 31 teams. The event raised $100,000 that was presented to the first grantee, Cedar River Clinics, Nov. 16.

All 2023 proceeds – registrations, donations and sponsorship funds – were donated to the grantee with the family underwriting this year’s event. The funds will be used by Cedar River Clinics to underwrite expenses for individuals such as gas, food, hotel accommodations and other costs associated with travel to Washington state to seek safe abortion services. This support is more important than ever as individuals see their reproductive rights eroded in states around the nation or face greater restrictions that create uncertainty for individuals to make a healthcare choice that is right for them, their partners and their families.

With the success of the 2023 event, Access Walk board members and staff are gearing up for the 2024 event that will take place Saturday, Sept. 14, at Volunteer Park.

Of the lofty goals for the 2024, here are a few:

  • 500 or more participants
  • Raise $150k
  • Generate awareness and create lasting partnerships that support an individual’s right to choose

Some things to look forward to for the 2024 event: Future Primitive Brewing will again be our beer tent sponsor, donating their tasty craft brews; a slate of vendors that support the vision and goal of Access Walk; and an inclusive walk that brings together the collective voice for individual reproductive rights.
